MISTAKES TO AVOID

[Mistake #1] “Applying to Online Job Boards”

84% of the jobs posted via online job boards do NOT pay enough to meet the standard cost of living.

They are low paying jobs, with no room for advancement. Plus, these jobs are considered High Risk, which means that you have a 46% of getting Laid-Off due to outsourcing or automation.

The remaining 16% of the jobs posted online, which are considered “Good Jobs”  require a college degree or specialized training (like a 2-Years Nursing Certification) with extensive experience.  The “Good Jobs” are also limited to only 5 fields:

  • Healthcare
  • Computer Science
  • Architectural & Electrical Engineering
  • Management
  • Business & Finance

If you don’t have College degree in one of these 5 industries, don’t make the mistake of applying to online job boards. However, EVEN IF you do have a degree or specialized training in these fields, applying to online job boards will typically result in the lowest pay in your field.

[Mistake #2] “Using the Same Resume for Every Job”

95% of the Resumes submitted are NEVER seen by a Hiring Manager.

It’s easier than ever to submit an application online. Companies receive hundreds and sometimes thousands of applications for EVERY job they post. Many of the submissions are from people who are unqualified that are just submitting their resume to as many companies as possible.

This strategy doesn’t work.

To save time, companies use applicant tracking systems to finds the applicants with the skills, experience and education. These systems scan each resume for specific keywords to match them against the job posting requirements and ranks the each of the candidates.

When you apply for a job you need to:

  • Carefully tailor your resume for each job you apply to.
  • Directly address qualifications found in the job description.
  • Increase chances of getting noticed by adding resume keywords based on the job description.
  • Focus on  information you can quantify in your work experience section.
  • Keep your resume formatting simple so that an ATS can accurately scan it.

In today’s job market, having the “perfect resume”, with the right skills, experience and education is still not enough. 85% of the companies today, look to Google and social media platforms to learn about potential employees.

[Mistake #3] “Take ANY Job You Can Get…”

When you get Laid-Off or Fired, it’s extremely tempting to take ANY job you can get to start getting a paycheck. Especially after months of applying to online job boards and submitting your resume to hundreds of companies.
